Sled Hockey

Sled or Sledge hockey, developed in the late 1980’s in Sweden is played by children and adults with a physical disability or those unable to play standing (stand-up) hockey.

Each player uses a modified hockey sled fitted with a unique seat and hockey skate blades mounted underneath the sled. In addition, skaters carry two shortened hockey sticks to assist in both propulsion and puck handling. Players wear, at a minimum, a helmet with face cage, mouth guard, shoulder pads, hockey jerseys, personal protection and hockey socks.

Sled hockey is run by a certified coaching staff and trained volunteers. As with all amateur ice hockey, USA Hockey rules and regulations are adhered to.

There are a growing number of sled hockey programs in the MidAmerican region (Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania). To view programs that may be in your area, click here.
